I was looking for Leonardo da Vinci’s book on anatomy. I learned a lot about anatomy but didn’t find the book. Een uitspraak van Keith Richards. De gitarist van de Rolling Stones zocht in zijn huis naar een boek van Leonardo da Vinci en viel daarbij van een trapje waarbij hij drie ribben brak. Een ongeluk met grote gevolgen, want de Bridges to Babylon tournee eind jaren negentig moest erdoor worden uitgesteld. Vorige maand kwam de wereldberoemde muzikant in het nieuws omdat hij bij een bibliotheek in Dartford /Kent een 50 jaar oude boete heeft openstaan. Het bedrag dat hij moet voldoen is inmiddels opgelopen tot zo’n 3000 pond, allemaal vanwege nooit teruggebrachte boeken. Keith Richards is een fanatiek lezer, dat moet haast wel.
Bovenstaande foto staat op internet. De rock ‘n’ roll opa ligt op een chaise longue en pingelt iets op zijn gitaar. Hij kijkt uit op één van zijn kasten. Dankzij een andere foto is goed te zien wat daar allemaal in staat. Op de bovenste planken is dat literatuur: Salman Rushdie met de Duivelsverzen, De Goddelijke komedie van Dante en een flink rijtje Ernest Hemingway. Een paar boeken verder staat de grootste verrassing: de sprookjes van Grimm. De rest van de kast ademt vooral een sfeer uit van oorlog en strijd. Met boeken als The Story of Airfighting een geschiedenis van oorlogsvoering in de lucht en The 900 days een boek over het beleg van Stalingrad. Opvallend is ook het grote aantal boeken over oorlogsvoering op zee uit de tijd van galjoenen en fregatten. Nelson and the Age of Fighting Sail, over de Engelse admiraal Horatio Nelson is daar een voorbeeld van. Muzieksporen zijn er nauwelijks terug te vinden. Slechts een paar titels hebben iets met muziek te maken: Papa John, een autobiografie van John Philips, zanger van The Mamas and the Papas, een autobiografie van muziekimpresario Bill Graham en een boek over de schilderijen van collega Rolling Stone Ron Wood. O ja, dat boek van Da Vinci is in de kast niet te vinden, dat staat waarschijnlijk in één van zijn andere kasten of is inmiddels teruggebracht naar de bibliotheek.
